SEE photos from Maki Oh’s first solo exhibition, This Side Up

by Ada Igboanugo

Fashion designer and entrepreneur, Maki Osakwe expressed her artistic talent via a photography exhibition. Osakwe presented her first solo exhibition, as an alternate form of expression not disregarding the Maki Oh signature that is storytelling which also shows in her designs as well, featuring over 20 mixed media photography art works that are densely textured, layered and complex.

The event, which took place at the Miliki Gallery, saw an array of star studded guests ranging from Antonia Soares, Dr Sid, Chief Osakwe, Orire Omatsola, Olumide Olagbegi, Temi Dollface, Tokini Peterside and a host of others.

Sponsored by Veuve Clicquot Champagne and organized by A White Space Creative Agency, as well as Nkechi Bakare, chief curator, working in close collaboration with the artist, the scope of the event delves into how truths about the feminine has been transformed, altered and hidden throughout time, in her works Osakwe challenges perceptions by reforming the feminine image and presenting her in her original state of being instead of the self that has been altered.

Osakwe’s process serves as a form of storytelling as it explores dipping, folding and painting over as methods through which the truths about the feminine have been concealed.
