Why Buhari won’t congratulate Dickson on election victory – Lai Mohammed

Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed has stated that President Muhammadu Buhari will not congratulate Seriake Dickson who won his re-election bid in the governorship election of Bayelsa state against All Progressives Congress’ Timipre Sylva.

After the election, Senator Ben Murray Bruce, representing Bayelsa east senatorial district, alongside other voices, condemned the silence of the Presidency over Dickson’s victory at the polls.

However, while speaking to journalists in Abuja on Monday, January 18, Lai Mohammed said that President Buhari would not emulate the show of good sportsmanship exemplified by his predecessor, Goodluck Jonathan in sending congratulatory messages to winners of elections irrespective of party affiliation.

“This president is not in the business of interfering and intervening in elections,” he started.

“What if he sent a congratulatory message and they go to court and the election is overturned, will he call back the congratulatory message?

“This president believes that the presidency should be insulated from the conduct of elections and their outcomes.”

He also revealed that there was no truth to the rumors of President Buhari taking a 91 days medical leave.

He stated that if the president planned to go on leave, it will not be a secret. He ascribed the rumor as part of the message of hate being preached against the president.
