The upper chamber of the National Assembly before the lawmakers on Wednesday eventually confirmed Musiliu Obanikoro as minister. This is amidst the supremacy battle between senators serving on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC).

It was observed that notwithstanding the various points of order raised by Senators Bukola Saraki, Gbenga Ashafa, Babajide Omoware against the confirmation of Obanikoro, the Senate went ahead to conduct the screening of Obanikoro, former minister of state for Defence after which he was confirmed.

Trouble started when the Senate Minority Leader, Gorge Akume, omitted Obanikoro’s name from the ministerial list he read to his colleagues at plenary. There was an absolute quietude for about a minute after Akume recognized the three other nominees in his speech without calling out the name of the embattled nominee. Immediately after the silence, screening commenced for the first three nominees mentioned even though Obanikoro eventually became the last of the nominees to be screened and confirmed.

As a former senator himself, the Senate allowed Obanikoro to “take a bow and go”, without answering questions, a privilege reserved for former federal lawmakers.

APC lawmakers responded by walking out of the session in protest.

After his confirmation, Obanikoro expressed gratitude to the members of the senate who ratified his nomination. He went further to state that he harbours no ill-feelings against the APC senators who opposed his confirmation.

According to the former Minister of State for Defence, “I am particularly grateful to the President of the Senate and other principal officers representing the Senate majority and minority.

“I have no ill feelings towards the Senators from Lagos who stood against me. Their position has amplified the strength of our democracy,” he said.

Several members of the opposition APC are against Obanikoro’s nomination after he was accused of colluding with other members of the PDP to rig the elections which saw Kayode Fayemi’s ouster in Ekiti.

The allegations against him are yet to be substantiated and Obanikoro has continued to deny any wrongdoing.
