Son of his father: Watch Seun Kuti disrupt concert so his fans can dance

by Adeniyi Abdul

That’s what makes Seun so charming – he does as his heart asks.

Afrobeat star Seun Kuti caused quite the stir at the Theater Royal in London. The musician was scheduled to perform on the last night of music showcase during the New world Nigeria event holding in Stratford but scheduling conflicts delayed his act. The main ruckus however occurred when he got on stage and security men in the theater prevented members of the audience from dancing. Noticing this, Seun said, “I’m suposed to have played from 9.15 to 10.40 so originally my contract is over. But I said no my fans have to have a good time, so I’m not going leave the venue, I’m only here because of you guys, so if some people are stopping you from dancing, I’m going to stop the show.”

Fans were visibly upset with many of them insisting they would get their money back and a group even chanting “Shame, Shame!” at one point.

Seun Kuti himself responded after saying “I’m sure if it was some white band playing here tonight they wouldn’t get treated so shabbily. If the fans can’t have a good time, what’s the point of playing the show? We have to stand up for what we believe in and I believe in my fans having a good time. There should be no restrictions to art and expression.”
