Soyombo Ayomikun: #BringBackOurGirls – Have we betrayed them? (Poem)

by Soyombo Ayomikun

May it
Be said
That
We never
Betrayed
#Chibok
With our
Silence

1.May we not forget
That the Chibok girls
Are innocent and beautiful souls
That should not have seen hell
That should not have seen darkness
That should not have tasted horror
But for the fact
That they are Nigerians
That they lived in Chibok
They’ve been led away to the slaughter
Now the lambs
Are silent!

2.Hot tears
Just dropped
From
The eyes
Of a
Girl
Who thinks
We have forgotten
Who thinks
Help will never come
Another round
Of Rape
Of pains
Awaits her
Today!

3.May we not forget
The town
We betrayed
With silence
With lies
After its daughters
Were lost
Chibok!
The town
With the giggles
And full smiles
Of its maidens
Swallowed by terror
Chibok!
A people
We neglected
After sharing their pains
For just a season
A tribe
Now crying alone
Chibok!

4.I am sure
The stars
Bleed
Seeing the girls
Bleed
Mountains mourn
Seeing them
Bound
The trees shiver
Witnessing them slapped
We can’t
Just move on
Yet
As if sanity
Has returned
As if the girls
Have been found
No!
We can’t move on yet

5.The
Night sky
Sees the
Horror
The
#ChibokGirls
Behold
At night,
How
They bleed
How
They scream
But
It can’t
Tell!

6.The sun
Sees
Our girls
Daily it rises
On them
Filling their paths
With its brilliance and warmth
Perhaps it has been thinking
Of becoming a ball of fire
So it can consume the dark lords
Sparing our daughters
I wish
We could
Ask the sun
But it can’t
Speak!

8.But then
Our lamentations
Fill the
Hearts
Of
Boko Haram
With warmth!
Our dirge
Serves as a sweet rhythm
To this dark host
Rapid is the rescue we want
Before it becomes too late

9.The chains
Are heavy
The horrors
Unimaginable
Tonight
They’ll
Again sleep
Beneath the
Watchful eyes
Of Terrorists!

10.May it
Be said
That
We never
Betrayed
#Chibok
With our
Silence
That our
Cries
Broke the
Chains
Of our
Daughters!

11.May we
Roar again
As a
Wounded
Herd,
As a
Clan
That cares,
We want
The Chibok
Stars
Returned
Alive!

12.The world
May forget
They didn’t breastfeed
Our daughters
The world
May give up
Only our wombs brought them forth
Which mother
Forgets her daughters?
Which nation
Neglects her own?
Which shepherd
Deserts his lambs?
Even when they
Are trapped between the jaws of a lion
Nigeria’s lambs are still quiet
They are still missing
We can’t embrace silence
Not now
Never!
May we not forget
The silence of the lambs
