#WorldCup2018: Spain sack Lopetegui and replaces him with Fernando Hierro

The Spanish National team have sacked Julen Lopetegui and replaced him with Real Madrid legend Fernando Hierro, just two days before their World Cup opener.

The crisis erupted after news leaked that Lopetegui had negotiated and accepted the Real Madrid job behind their back a few weeks after renewing his contract with the Spanish National team.

The President of the Spanish Football Federation, Luis Rubiales said he received a phone call from Real Madrid a few minutes before the appointment was made public.

Controversy

Some reports suggest that the Real Madrid players already knew that Lopotegui was in contact or had accepted the role at Real Madrid, and the club was only forced to announce the appointment after the story was leaked in the Spanish camp.

Lopotegui put the Spanish federation in a tough position by negotiating a contract offer and did not put off Real Madrid’s advances till after the World Cup.

It also triggers profound questions on the ethical code of the Real Madrid board and President Fiorentina Perez for contacting a coach while preparing for the World Cup.

The event puts the Spanish camp in disarray and puts Spain’s World Cup chances in doubt. Fernando Hierro, Lopotegui’s replacement was formerly the Technical Director of the Spanish Football Federation but will not have enough time to work with the squad before their opening day game against Portugal.
