Who is Steve Scalise? | The US congressman who got shot during baseball practice today

News of a shooting in Northern Virginia, United States has just filtered into news sites.

One of the victims of the attack has been identified as Steve Scalise, the House of Representatives Majority Whip and according to President Donald Trump’s response to the shooting via Twitter, Scalise was “badly injured”. He was hit by a bullet in the hip while at an “early morning practice for an annual charity baseball game on Wednesday near Eugene Simpson Stadium Park in Alexandria”, according to Vox.

Besides being the House Majority Whip, what else do we know about Steve Scalise?

The Republican is a Representative for Louisiana 1st congressional district and before joining the United States House of Representatives as Majority whip in 2014, he served as a member of the Louisiana state legislature for over 10 years.

In President Trump’s tweet, he described Scalise as “a true friend and patriot” and that’s a fact considering Scalise supported Trump’s presidential bid and the executive order for the travel ban that bars Muslims from six Islamic majority countries from getting into the US.

The Telegraph also reports that Scalise “has voted with Mr Trump on the vast majority of Congress motions, including dismantling the Dodd-Frank financial regulations, and withholding Affordable Care Act subsidies from people until their citizenship is verified.”

He said at the time, “Let’s be careful about who comes into our country to make sure that they’re not terrorists”.

The 51-year-old married his wife, Jennifer in 2005 and they have two kids, Madison and Harrison.

The gunman has reportedly been killed by the U.S Capitol Police.
