A 12-year-old pupil, Chidimma Ukachukwu, reportedly died while being flogged by her school teacher for not doing her homework.
Sources say the secondary school student fainted in the process of being flogged by a female teacher and later died while being rushed to an undisclosed hospital in Awka, Anambra State.
The source also told reporters that the commissioner for Education, Uju Okeke, ordered the closure of the school as a result of the sad incident.
The young girl’s family are said to be in grief over the girl’s death. Her father, Simeon Ukachukwu, confirmed the incident saying it was an act of God.
When contacted by reporters to know what informed the school’s closure, Okeke denied giving the order saying the school was on Mid-term break. Investigations however reveal that the school was in session just like every school in the state.
The chairperson of the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT), Awka South LGA, Buife Ndigwe, told reporters that primary and secondary schools in the state would go on mid-term break next week.
When contacted, the public relations officer of the state police command, Ralph Uzoigwe, said that the matter had not been reported to the police, but promised that it would be investigated.
