A nursing mother of a two-month old baby was shot dead by gunmen in front of her house at Fadama Mada area of Bauchi state, on the night of Monday, 13 October.

Eyewitnesses say that the deceased, Loricia, who was a popular business woman, was accosted by two gunmen, just as she arrived her house after closing from her business at about 7 pm.

The late Loricia, who is a mother of four, had just horned for her children to open the gate, when one of her sons, 10-year-old Makochukwu, opened the gate to see two men with guns walking toward his mother’s car. They demanded money from her, after which she was shot twice through the windscreen, before fleeing with her handbag.

A woman leader in the deceased’s church said, “The husband Leo was not at home. He went to church. They were shouting ‘where is the money, where is the money’ before they shot her at close range.”

She described Loricia, as a very friendly woman who loved everybody. “If you are upset and you meet her, you will become happy. I don’t know why anyone would kill such person. I have never heard of a woman being killed like that. Loricia never told us she had problem with anyone. It is simply painful and a mystery.”

The woman leader also added that Loricia had been making plans to dedicate her two-month old baby on 9 November at the church.

“We fixed second Sunday of November for the dedication at Our Lady of Loreto Caothlic Church Fadama Mada parish and she was excited about it. She talked about it all the time as we almost concluded arrangements the dedication of her baby. She called me to inform me that she had booked for the reception at Chaba Hotel and we made arrangement for coking only to hear news that she was killed. It is sad,” she added.

Meanwhile, an Igbo leader in state reportedly stated that not less than four Igbos have been killed in recent time in the state.”Her death brings to four the number of Igbos killed in Bauchi. Her own is sad because she is a woman. We implore the police to bring the killers to books”

The husband has since relocated his family including the baby to GRA in Bauchi. The police spokesperson in the state, DSP Mohammed, claimed to have heard of the killing, but so far,  has little details about it.
