The election postponement is about something more sinister – Afenifere warns

by Kolapo Olapoju

The Afenifere Renewal Group (ARG) says the scheme to postpone the general elections had been in place for some time, and that there is an ulterior motive behind the move.

The group made the statement on Wednesday, February 11, at a social discourse in Ibadan, Oyo state.

The chairman of the ARG, Olawale Oshun, said: “We as a people are stunned by the recent postponement and what could as well turn out to be the guided statement of INEC on the poll shift by six weeks. This is definitely not a change that the Yoruba as a people expected.”

“It is not our duty to speak on behalf of any political party but since we have brought the task of appropriating the views and collective desires of the Yoruba people upon ourselves, we owe it a duty to speak clearly and loudly on emerging scenarios and matters arising, especially those with the potential for a great impact on the Yoruba people.”

“It is in this light that we the ARG and by extension Yoruba people contend that this election shift is certainly not just about elections. We believe that the postponement is about something more sinister. It has long been foreseen by Nigerians and we had awaited its doomed arrival in awe. We contend therefore that even with the so-called multi-national forces now engaging Boko Haram, restoring sustainable peace in affected areas is not a task that can be accomplished in six weeks.”

Guest speaker at the event, a former president of the Nigeria Bar Association, Rotimi Akeredolu (SAN), stated that until every region of the country was allowed free expression in terms of the actualisation of its set objectives, there could be no end to misery of the people of Nigeria.

“The South-Western region has been the worst hit since it was corralled into a pseudo federal arrangement by the colonialists in 1914. This fact is evident in virtually all facets of our lives as a people. There is very little gain in asserting the obvious, namely the inability of the country, disparate and diverse, to chart the course of true federalism since it became a political reality,” Akeredolu added.
