[The Injustice Blog] Why the Anambra allegations relate to the NGO Regulation Bill

The allegations raised by Aisha Edward, the President, Association of People Living With Sickle-Cell Disease, as it relates to issues concerning SCD victims in Anambra has opened another can of worms that might give a backing to the proposed NGO Regulatory Bill that is currently generating controversy across the country.

In her interview with Sahara Reporters, she alleged that Laboratory scientists, collect SCD victims blood samples and send to international organisations for money.

In her words, “These people collect our blood samples and send them to the United Nations for classical fraud. The victims are not even benefiting from the investigation and after that, they will now tell you they are doing research. How many researches have we been able to do in Nigeria? These people collect samples of sicklers from the grassroots after which the United Nations pay them They have been doing this research since the year 2000 and the research is still ongoing and then some persons accounts will be getting fatter,”

This allegation of hers sounds similar to the allegations against NGO’s raised by Honourable Umar Jibril. While reacting to the condemnation trailing his proposed NGO Regulation Bill, Honourable Jibril said it is to encourage accountability and transparency in the way and Manner NGO collect funds from donor agencies. He said “However, recent developments have shown that some people registered NGOs, solicited for funds and disappeared”

While reacting to the condemnation trailing his proposed NGO Regulation Bill, Honourable Jibril said it is to encourage accountability and transparency in the way and Manner NGO collect funds from donor agencies. He said, “However, recent developments have shown that some people registered NGOs, solicited for funds and disappeared”.

These accusations by Aisha seems to be in consonance with what Honourable Jibril is using to champion the course of his NGO Regulation Bill. As much as we believe that the NGO bill is an anti-people bill, the question is: if truly NGOs and other organisations solicit funds from international development partners and divert such funds, why are they not being prosecuted?

As a result, relevant security agencies must probe these accusations and bring the culpable ones to book to serve as a deterrent to others that might engage in such acts.
