”The Set Up” is one of the most anticipated movies of 2019, and now we have a trailer

The Set Up is Niyi Akinmolayan’s followup to the bombastic comedy Chief Daddy, a movie that I still remember for its histrionics. Before now, the teaser for The Set Up gave us a glimpse into the film. With the trailer released recently, we have a better picture of the mood and characters and I have to say, the first few seconds of the trailer were the best, aided by some neat voiceover work.

Per the plot synopsis, a young drug smuggler Chike (Adesua Etomi-Wellington) gets more than she bargains for and is drawn into a web when she is hired by a social (Jim Iyke) to assist with his scheme to marry a wealthy heiress (Dakore Egbuson-Akande). Adesuwa, who is refreshingly becoming prolific, still channels her ”tough girl” attitude loosely evoking her character in the upcoming movie Muna.

Towards the end of the trailer, ”Trust No One” and ”Believe Nothing” is ominously lettered across, and I’m actually curious to what will happen in the movie’s third act. The Set Up is written by Chinaza Onuzo, who owns a weighty portfolio that includes The Arbitration, The Wedding Party 2, New Money and Up North. Out in cinemas August 9, The Set Up also stars Kehinde Bankole, Tina Mba, Ayoola Ayolola, Marie Humbert, Damilare, Wendy Lawal, and Uzor Arukwe.
