The Thread: “We do not have fire extinguishers in the hostels…” | An eye witness account of Yaba Tech fire

Early this morning, we brought you a report of the fire outbreak at Yaba College of Technology.
YNaija spoke to an eyewitness, Uche, who tweets  @UcheIsClown, and this is what he had to say.

The cause of the fire outbreak

“The fire started in girl’s hostel, Yaba Tech. The name of the hostel is Bakassi. The fire started at about to 5. You can say 4.45 am, from a spark in an electricity circuit box. The sparking has been going on for days now, I think, but no attention was brought to it. So today, it decided to raise an alarm. So the fire started, and about 20 minutes later, two of the school’s fire trucks (Yaba Tech Fire Service) arrived, but there was water shortage. Before the arrival of the Fire service trucks, students were already using buckets of water to quench the fire. The Fire Service ran out of water so the fire continued to burn. The fire rose from the first room (the room where the faulty electricity circuit box was) to other rooms till it burnt more than half of the first floor.  No students were trapped in the building. As soon as the fire increased, the girls ran out. Some girls made it out, while some slumped, perhaps due to shock or smoke inhalation. They were rushed to the medical clinic and were attended to.”

“The fire kept rising, so the Lagos State Emergency Unit came in an hour after to quench the fire. I don’t think they were doing anything because the fire trucks were idle… They couldn’t even quench the fire because the building was high. They wasted time, sha. When the fire reduced, they started quenching the fire through eye service.”

About extinguishers in the hostel buldings

“We do not have fire extinguishers in the hostel buildings. There was a fire that even happened on Monday in the Boys hostel, but you know we are guys so we were able to put it off immediately. There was no fire extinguisher. It’s water we used.”

On loss of properties and compensation for the students’ loss

“Most girls have lost heir laptops, bags, ID cards, documents, everything, and some of them are writing exams today. I’m not sure the school will pay them damages for this fire. Some girls ran out with wrapper, some even ran out naked, so I don’t think they will meet anything when they get back. It’s normal now. They’ll like to cover everything up. The girl who died in the school last year, the school charged every student 5,000 naira each for damages caused by their vandalisation of the medical clinic. We just broke some things sha, but I’m sure 100,000 will have been able to cover for everything, but they charged students 5,000 naira each. So this one now, they will not pay students anything.”

The school has not addressed the student body on the fire incident. Can you imagine? They even pasted an exam timetable.

Criticisms of  Yaba Tech school authority

  • We do not always have water in the hostels
  • They neglect complaints from students
  • We do not have SUG, so there’s no way students can protest or talk about anything because you will get expelled. They treat us like babes here.

The school authorities have some questions to answer.
