Yemi Alade has had a great year. She released an album- MAMA AFRICA, picked up the ‘Best Female Act’ awards at the 2016 MAMAS (and was one of the three hosts at the award show). She also featured in Shell’s #makethefuture campaign video alongside five other international musicians. We have said it here “that Yemi Alade’s decision to focus heavily on African themes in her music, branding herself explicitly as ‘Mama Africa’ in the process, has paid off handsomely.”

But the question for the night is does Yemi Alade make good music? Some tweeps don’t think so. There’s talk that she ruined the remix of Tekno’s Pana, and some persons have wondered at how she comes by the titles of some of her songs- for instance, Gucci Ferragamo.

When one of our writers expressed disappointment at Yemi Alade’s use of Yoruba in Shell’s  #makethefuture campaign video, some commenters practically chewed her up.

Sure a STUPID write up…Tolu Omeyeni self claimed critic my ass, you really have no clue honestly. Did you reach out to Shell or Yemi Alade’s camp to find out if they requested her to use Yoruba? or you just jump into your stupid conclusion. What she has achieved is something to be celebrated and not condemned, her just being on this project is a big deal! something that was up in Time Square Newyork, Piccadilly in London, Buenos Aires in Argentina a first for any Nigerian or African based artist, and your here writing crap…Hateful GOAT

But it would appear that one of the unpopular music opinions around Nigerian Twitter is that Yemi Alade has not put out good songs in a while.  This discussion took as the All Africa Music Awards (AFRIMA) was on going yesterday.  It was at AFRIMA that Aramide beat Yemi Alade and Tiwa Savage to scoop Best Female Artiste West Africa.
