Today’s Daily Brief: Guber Elections marred by irregulaties | PDP, Wike wins Rivers gov election | PDP, APC disagree over Kogi Assembly results, and more

The Peoples Democratic Party has questioned the conduct of some INEC officials and security agencies in the last Saturday’s governorship and state assembly elections.

PDP National Publicity Secretary, Olisa Metuh in a statement on Monday said the elections were characterized by widespread irregularities supported by INEC and security officials to the advantage of the APC and wondered if such officials were intimidated by APC’s blackmail and propaganda to deliver its candidates in the polls.

The Independent National Electoral Commission in the early hours of Monday declared the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Chief Nyesom Wike, the winner of the governorship elections in Rivers State.

Wike won the election by polling 1,029,102, which represents 87.77 per cent of the votes while the All Progressives Congress governorship candidate, Dr. Dakuku Peterside, came second with 124,896 votes (10.65 per cent).

Prince Tonye Princewill, who is the governorship candidate of the Labour Party got 10,142 to place third. His votes represents 0.86 per cent of the number of votes cast.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Sokoto state has won all the 30 seats in the State House of Assembly.

Declaring the results in Sokoto on Monday, the Head of Operation of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Sokoto Office,  Alhaji Hassan Sidi Aliyu, said the APC defeated the Peoples Democratic Party in all the 30 constituencies in the state.

The two major parties in the race for the 25 seats in the Kogi State House of Assembly, the All Progressives Congress and the Peoples Democratic Party, have diagree on the election results as the Independent National Electoral Commission in Kogi State delays the announcement of results of the April 11 poll.

Tension continues to mount in the state as the results of elections in other states of the federation, where the governorship and House of Assembly elections held the same day, have been announced.

Vice President Namadi Sambo on Monday presided over the federal government’s transition committee’s meeting, where the terms of reference  and guidelines for preparing the handover briefs for the incoming government were discussed.

The meeting was held at the vice presidential wing of the Presidential Villa.

Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Anyim Pius Anyim, who fielded questions from State House correspondents shortly after the closed doors meeting, said the committee met to discuss the terms of reference and develop the guidelines for preparing the handover briefs.
