Three people including two students of the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, died yesterday at Gubi dam, Ganjuwa Local Government Area of Bauchi State while on vacation to celebrate the Easter holidays.

Reports say the students organised a party to celebrate the holiday by the dam and a few of them decided to take a swim in the dam.

A student reportedly drowned and another student who tried to rescue him also died in the process.

A third person was also said to have lost his life while trying to rescue the students.

Residents of the area spoke to reporters wondering why people still swim in the dam considering several tragic drowning incidents which had previously occurred in the area. They called on the government to pass a law prohibiting anyone from organising social functions close to the dam.

Aminu Aliyu Gital, the General Manager of the Bauchi State Water Board confirmed the incident calling on parents and guardians to endeavour to monitor the activities of their children and wards.

“We want to warn people against going to the dam to celebrate. There are many ways people can celebrate a festival, instead of exposing themselves to danger,” he said.
