Trump Jr to face Senate panel over ties with Russian officials

Alan Futerfas, Attorney of Donald Trump Jr. has disclosed that his client would be meeting in private with the Senate Judiciary Committee on Thursday for an interview.

Essence of the meeting

The meeting is aimed at discussing a 2016 meeting he arranged with a Kremlin-linked lawyer who promised damaging information about Hillary Clinton during last year’s electioneering campaign.

Futerfas confirmed the proposed meeting in an email to POLITICO. He wrote, “We look forward to a professional and productive meeting and appreciate the opportunity to assist the committee”.

The meeting has always been in the pipeline without a specific date of its arrangement after the President’s eldest son was called to publicly testify before the Senate committee in July but he instead opted to conduct both a private interview and hand over documents for committee investigators.

The Senate panel’s leaders, Sens. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) and Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.), who issued a joint statement last week to disclose the expediency of the meeting said the meeting will be conducted under the same terms as previously announced.

The allegations

Trump Jr. is one of the many people in president Trump’s camp including Paul Manafort who are embroiled in the legal tussle and Federal investigation surrounding Russia meddling in the 2016 election. He was alleged by analyst to have violated “federal criminal statutes prohibiting solicitation or acceptance of anything of value from a foreign national” by brokering a meeting with a Russian attorney in exchange for dirt on the Democrat candidate – Clinton.

His defense

Trump Jr refuted the claim saying the meeting which was attended by the then campaign manager, Paul Manafort and Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner was not in respect to the election and thus falsely reported.
