The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Rivers state has said its lawyers will appeal the sack of Senator George Sekibo by the state elections petition tribunal for the 2015 rerun.

The tribunal had on Wednesday ruled in favour of Chief Andrew Uchendu, who was the candidate for the All Progressives Congress for the Rivers East senatorial seat.

Publicity Secretary, PDP, Rivers State chapter, Samuel Nwanosike on Friday said the tribunal did not check certified document from the Independent National Electoral Commission.

Nwanosike said, “Our lawyers are already working towards appealing the ruling. It is a very funny ruling that the tribunal decided to choose police report and police certified document instead of the original certified document from INEC, which has the authority to present certified documents they use in conducting the election.

“The Electoral Act is clear on this and the Constitution is clear on it that INEC is the body saddled with the conduct of elections and it is also the one to produce the documents used in conducting elections.

“As far as we are concerned, that judgment is an error and the appellate court will need to look at the judgment and tell Nigerians if the tribunal was right in discarding the Electoral Act and going for the police report.”

Nwanosike’s counterpart in the APC, Mr. Chris Finebone, however, said the ruling had once again shown that it was necessary to play politics according to the rule.

He said, “The ruling is a victory that shows that it pays to be resilient; it is a victory for the underdog; underdog in the sense that everything was rolled against him (Uchendu), but he stood firm. The victory is a manifestation of justice for the common man.”
