UCL last 16 Roundup: PSG school Chelsea | Benfica seal late winner against Zenit

It was the 2nd leg round of matches in the Uefa Champions league which saw Paris Saint Germaine dump the English premier league defending champions, Chelsea out of the competition while Benfica left it late to claim victory over Zenit as they progressed to the quarterfinals of the competition.

In the game between PSG versus Chelsea, the south-Londoners aimed to turn around a 2-1 deficit which they suffered a fortnight ago in Paris.

PSG hit the ground running at Stamford bridge after their star attacker Zlatan Ibrahimović played a very-concise pass across goal for a simple tap in from Adrian Rabiot who replaced the injured Verrati on the team sheet to put the Laurent Blanc’s men in the driving seat.

However, Chelsea were not going down without a fight as they fought back after former Barcelona winger, Pedro won the ball from PSG’s Thiago Motta passing it to Willain who then laid it off for Diego Costa who sent a shot past Kevin Trapp to level the scoreline.

Ibrahimović later turned goal scorer in the second half as Angel Di Maria swung a cross from the left to allow the swede to blast in the second goal of the night sending the French team into the last 8 of the competition.

PSG won the match 2 -1 and 4-2 aggregate win over Guus Hiddink’s men.

Earlier on Wednesday evening at the Petrovsky Stadium, Benfica played a dogged match with a stubborn Zenith side as the Russian club side looked to overturn a 1-0 loss to edge out their Portuguese counterparts.

Zenit thought they had done enough to force extra-time at the Petrovsky Stadium on Wednesday when Hulk headed in Yuri Zhirkov‘s cross to level the last-16 tie at 1-1.

However, Benfica – who took a 1-0 lead from the first leg into the second in Russia – were soon back in control as Nicolas Gaitan struck with five minutes of normal time to go.

The two-time European champions then ensured their passage into the last eight as an injury time Talisca goal scored in the 96th minute handed Benfica a 2-1 win on the night, and a 3-1 victory on aggregate.
