UCL Roundup: Athletico Madrid knockout Barcelona | Bayern Munich secures hard-fought victory

On Wednesday night, all eyes were on the Estadio Vicente Calderon for the 2nd leg of the all Spanish quarter-final clash between Barcelona and Athletico Madrid.

Following Tuesday’s brilliant performance from Real Madrid, especially Ronaldo‘s 3-goal magic, their arch-rivals Barcelona were looking to finish things off against Athletico – heading into the game with 2-1 lead from the first leg.

However Barcelona’s bland display in the first half saw them concede a 36th minute goal scored by Athletico forward, Antoine Griezmann after a fantastic curled cross by Saúl Ñíguez Esclapez found the head of the Frenchman.

Although Barcelona fought back in the second half, a Greizmann penalty in the 88th minute ensured victory for Diego Simeone’s men knocking out the 2014/2015 champions out of the competition.

Elsewhere in Portugal, Bayern Munich booked their place in the semi-finals as they secured victory over Benfica in a 3-2 aggregate win.
