What would you do? Church bans woman for refusing to condemn her lesbian daughter

Would you condemn your own child because your church told you to do so?  That’s the question that a mother had to ask, as she had to figure out what love really means for her and her family.

The Ridgedgale Church of Christ told Linda Cooper that, in order to remain a member of the church, she had to condemn her daughter’s lesbian lifestyle.  The mother had to announce in front of the church that her daughter’s way of life was a sin against God, or be kicked out of the church for good.

The mother refused to condemn her child.  As a result, she was stopped from entering into the church.

“It has been days and she’s still crying,” Linda’s husband Hunt Cooper told the Times Free Press. “It’s almost like losing a family member.”

The call for a public condemnation came after Linda supported her daughter’s campaign to get her employer to recognize her marriage to a woman.  They’d been dating for 11 years and got married last spring.  The city eventually expanded its benefits to gay workers.

Ridgedale minister Ken Willis said that Linda Cooper needed to be expelled from the church for her behavior.

“You certainly can’t condone that lifestyle, whether it’s any kind of sin – whether they’re shacked up with someone or living in a state of fornication or they’re guilty of crimes,” Willis said.”You don’t condone it. You still love them as a parent.”

What would you do in this situation?
