YNaija Exclusive: Niger Delta Avengers are criminals seeking attention – Osinbajo

By Isime Esene

The Vice President of Nigeria, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo has described the Niger Delta Avengers and other militant groups attacking oil installations in the South-south region of the country as “criminals”.

He said this at a media forum which took place today (Friday) at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

The forum was organised to discuss President Muhammadu Buhari’s achievements in his first year in office, the government’s vision, agenda and plans.

Prof. Osinbajo spoke about the resurgence of militancy in the Niger Delta saying the Niger Delta Avengers cannot be described otherwise.

According to Osinbajo, “I don’t believe there is any such group. They’re just a bunch of criminals who are being used. You cannot describe them otherwise. We shouldn’t tolerate the kind of behaviour displayed by them [militant groups]. We have to deal with them firmly.”

“I think some of them are trying to get attention so that they can get some kind of negotiation or the other.”

“Yes, we engage with anyone who has genuine grievances. But you cannot blow up pipelines and cost the country over 800,000 barrels per day and come to the government and say you’re Niger Delta Avengers.”

“If we decide to pacify anyone who has decided to hold the government to ransom, we will end up creating monsters,” Osinbajo stated.

The Vice President also answered questions bothering on the economy, corruption, insecurity, and more.
