#YNaija2018Review: Sterling vs GTB, Cee-C vs Tobi… See the Top 10 beefs of the year

Ready. Steady. Fight.

  1. Aisha Buhari vs Muhammadu Buhari

The first couple have been known to nurse tensions between them- recall her criticism of him and his “the other room” bomb response- but Aisha Buhari dialed things up a notch this year when she repeatedly alleged that a few persons had hijacked her husband’s government. Speaking with the Voice of America Hausa service, Buhari denied any such hijack rumors and dismissing them as ‘’her business.’’

  1. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala vs Donald Duke

When Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala released her book, Fighting Corruption is Dangerous, an account of her second stint as minister of finance, a small passage detailed former Governor of Cross River state, Donald Duke requesting that she turn down Goodluck Jonathan’s offer to serve in his administration so as not to give the PDP government any credibility. Duke did not find this reveal funny, insisting it was simply a matter of friends discussing career options. However he couldn’t resist one last riposte and claimed that he was right anyway as Okonjo-Iweala ‘’left Nigeria poorer than she met it.”

  1. Ovie Omo-Agege vs Saraki

Senator Ovie Omo-Agege and Senate President Bukola Saraki do not see eye to eye. This beef started when Omo-Agege accused his colleagues of working against President Buhari by adopting an amendment to section 25 of the electoral act. Omo-Agege was promptly suspended for 90 days following recommendations by a Senate committee. The suspension was nullified by a court but Ovie-Agege was fingered in the invasion of the Senate which led to the theft of the mace. He was expelled by his party’s state branch.

  1. Wizkid vs Baby Mama

In September, Shola Ogudu, mother of Wizkid’s son, Boluwatife put out an Instagram bomb complete with screenshots and receipts that accused Wizkid of being pure scum, a deadbeat dad. According to Ogudu, she was both father and mother to their son and received little from Wizkid apart from years of maltreatment and emotional abuse. The battle had been on in private for years and Wizkid may have preferred it so, but Ogudu was sick and tired of it all.

  1. Samuel Ortom vs Police

The Governor of Benue state was engaged in long running battles with officials of the police force at several periods of his very troubled year. From accusing the state Commissioner of Police of valuing the lives of cows ahead of human beings to hinting at the Inspector General of Police being complicit in the killings in the state communities to going toe to toe against police spokesperson Jimoh Moshood who called him a ‘’drowning man’’, the Governor of Benue state has indeed been running from pillar to post.

  1. Tomi Adesina vs Nora Roberts

We don’t know what Nigerian-American writer Tomi Adeyemi was thinking when she accused bestselling American novelist Nora Roberts of unfairly copying the title of Adeyemi’s bestselling Children of Blood and Bone book but it must have been something major. Even after Adeyemi issued something resembling an apology, Roberts who released her own title, Of Blood and Bone in December, put out a widely shared blog post in which she took Adeyemi to the cleaners.

  1. Bukola Saraki vs Adams Oshiomhole

Since Senate President Bukola Saraki defected to the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP), his relationship with the All Progressives Congress (APC) party chairman, Adams Oshiomhole has been understandably frosty. This year, amongst other things, Saraki urged Mr President to look into accusations of Oshiomhole accepting bribes from party members during the primaries contests. Oshiomhole threatened court action. Saraki expressed his readiness to face off in court.

  1. Cee-C Nwadiora vs Tobi Bakre

This one played out live on television and we were all glued to our screens lapping up every moment of it. Formerly lovebirds, the volatile relationship between Big Brother Naija housemates Cee-C and Tobi degenerated into an ugly meltdown session that had Cee-C hurling unprintable names at Tobi. She received a strike from Big Brother and a stern warning for provoking her fellow housemate.

  1. Sterling Bank vs GTB

Sterling Bank Plc started it all with a picture tweet, subtly throwing shade at not just Guaranty Trust Bank, but three other major commercial banks. The tweet went viral within hours. GTB ran to Central Bank of Nigeria, crying foul, and Sterling issued an apology. Months later, Sterling was back on the matter, this time mounting a giant billboard at the entrance of the GTB sponsored fashion weekend. The shade of it all.

  • Adams Oshiomhole vs Rochas Okorocha

Imo state’s Governor Rochas Okorocha met a brick wall when his attempts at installing a political dynasty through himself, wife and in-law were stalled by APC chairman Oshiomhole. At least that is how Oshiomhole tells it. Okorocha, never one to back down from a messy duel, turned the tables and labelled Oshiomhole “the father of nepotism.’’ Speaking through his Chief Press Secretary, Okorocha listed Oshiomhole’s family members who had benefitted from his tenure as governor in Edo state.
