YNaija’s 12 days of Christmas – the U-23 champions

In a lot of ways, 2016 has been a very stressful year. Hopefully, it hasn’t been as stressful for you as it has been for our dear nation, Nigeria.

Still, there is a lot to be thankful for. And so, in our special version of ’12 days of Christmas’, we’ll remind you – with the Good News only – of the reasons why things have not all been bad so far.

Without further ado:

On the seventh day of Christmas

2016 sent to us:

the Dream Team;

The Clean Up;

a teenage technovator;

PENCOM getting it right;

Wizkid’s international status;

Ayodele Dada;

The Number 1 best female football team in Africa;

The champions that are our U-23 football team

This year’s Rio Olympics didn’t play out well for Nigeria; not with Solomon Dalung as our sports minister. The first report was of our football team being stranded in Atlanta where they had been training ahead of the competitions because the airline booked to convey them refused to fly until full payments were received.

They didn’t arrive Brazil until barely six hours before their first match against Japan. To everyone’s amazement, the John Mikel Obi-led team still managed to beat Japan 5-4 under the grim circumstances.

Fighting through till the end -despite non-payment of allowances – the team came back home with a bronze medal and $390,000 from Japanese surgeon, Katsuya Takasu.
