15 of the over 250 school girls abducted by Boko Haram from Chibok, Borno, have been awarded scholarships to attend the American University Nigeria Academy, AUN, Yola.
The 15 girls were some of the lucky few who managed to escape the captivity of the Boko Haram, after being kidnapped from their hostels at the Government Secondary School, Chibok, Borno State on 14 April, by members of the Islamic terrorist sect.
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, who is the founder of the AUN institution, announced the scholarships on his Twitter account, with an accompanying photo of the girls in lecture room.
He tweeted, “15 of the #ChibokGirls who escaped have been admitted into AUN Academy on a scholarship.”
Tweeting further, he also thanked some unnamed individuals, whom he says raised funds to make the scholarship a reality.
He wrote, “My sincere thanks to the good spirited individuals and friends who raised funds for this worthy cause. #BringBackOurGirls.”
He also called for the safe return of the abducted girls, tweeting, “It is heartbreaking to see how much the Chibok parents have suffered. We must pray for the safe return of all the girls.”
