After 77 days: How does Buhari look?

by Alexander O. Onukwue

Odigie Oyegun, the Chairman of the APC, in the company of four APC Governors and a Minister, paid a visit to President Muhammadu Buhari in London.

A picture from the visit shows the President, Buhari, at a dinner table with his visitors. Buhari’s look is of one who appears to be in good spirits, as would be reported by Rochas Okorocha, one of the four Governors.

It was the first time a picture of President Buhari would be produced since he left Abuja on the evening of the 7th of May for his medical vacation in London. The Governor’s visit occurred a day short of the 77th day of Buhari’s absence in London.

Like Osinbajo’s quick round trip a fortnight ago, the visit of the APC team to Buhari was announced before hand, neither by the Presidency nor by the APC media organs. It was probably designed to be a commitment by the Party to shut down the elements of doubts in public discourse about it not being fully committed to the care and health of President Buhari.

The President’s health has been the subject of much conjecture. He has spent nearly 30 days more than the 49 he spent between January and March, confirming that whatever it is that has kept him away does have a good grip on him. Pressures from Nigerians for his health status to be revealed have not been yielded to by the President’s team. Alternatively, little snippets like audio messages and still pictures have been released as exhibits that the President is doing well and on his way to recovery.

The APC’s visit to Buhari was not a fact-finding mission for Nigerians; it was pretty much the ruling Party’s affair. That dinning photo from the visit which has made the front page of nearly every newspaper in the country this Monday morning, but it has not necessarily assuaged Nigerians that the sea is calm and the ship can keep cruising.

It will be believed that Oyegun and the Governors met with Buhari, but what cannot still be clear, regardless of the Rochas Okorocha’s words, is the actual state of President Buhari.
