Former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, has reiterated his membership of the Labour Party (LP) despite his recent participation in a coalition led by opposition figures under the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Speaking on Monday, Obi clarified that his involvement in the alliance was aimed at stopping President Bola Tinubu’s re-election and promoting a more effective government. He also restated his intention to run for president in 2027.

Dismissing rumours of being named Atiku Abubakar’s running mate, Obi said, “Nobody has ever discussed with me whether I’m going to be anything. What I know is that I’m going to contest for the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and I believe I am qualified for it.”

NLC targets private sector in push for ₦70,000 minimum wage compliance

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has pledged to increase enforcement of the newly approved ₦70,000 national minimum wage, with a particular focus on non-compliant employers in the unorganised private sector.

NLC Assistant Secretary-General, Onyeka Christopher, noted that while public sector implementation has seen modest progress, many private sector workers still earn as low as ₦15,000 monthly which is far below the new threshold.

“In the coming months, we will focus on the private sector to ensure every eligible worker receives the minimum wage, leaving no category behind,” he said.

He assured the military of the Presidency’s full support to act boldly and without hesitation in restoring peace across the nation.

Nigeria suffers economic losses of up to $26 billion every year due to persistent power outages, according to the latest Africa Trade Barometer survey by Standard Bank.

The report notes that this estimate excludes the additional $22 billion spent annually on fuel for off-grid generators, which many businesses and households rely on due to unreliable power supply.

This revelation comes amid a series of recent national grid collapses, with three blackouts reported within just seven days this month, plunging large parts of the country into darkness.
