Top 5 Stories of The Day | Atiku Dumps PDP for the Third Time Over Party Crisis

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the third time, citing irreconcilable differences with the party’s leadership and a deviation from its founding principles.

His latest defection drew mixed reactions from political associates and critics, many of whom questioned the timing and motives behind his decision.

Atiku, who has had a long and complicated relationship with the PDP, said the party no longer represents the ideals that once made it a strong political force.

JAMB flags over 9,000 fake admissions for 2024

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has flagged at least 9,469 fake admissions across 20 tertiary institutions for the 2024 academic session.

The board revealed that these admissions were granted outside its Central Admission Processing System (CAPS), which remains the only recognised platform for legitimate admissions in Nigeria.

JAMB has repeatedly warned institutions against such backdoor practices, stressing that students admitted outside CAPS risk being disqualified from the mandatory National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme.

151 senior police officers face disciplinary panel over misconduct

The Nigeria Police Force has disclosed that 151 senior officers are currently undergoing disciplinary proceedings for alleged misconduct and professional violations.

The Force Disciplinary Committee convened on Monday, July 14, and will continue its sessions until Friday, July 25, 2025, at the IGP Smart Conference Hall in Abuja.

Force spokesperson, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, said the process aims to uphold internal accountability and professional standards, with the officers undergoing a thorough and transparent review in line with police regulations.

Obasanjo faults Nigerian leadership, says new constitution alone won’t solve problems

Top 5 Stories of The Day | Atiku Dumps PDP for the Third Time Over Party Crisis

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has criticised Nigerian leaders for the country’s persistent challenges, saying the problem lies more with those implementing the constitution than the constitution itself.

Speaking at the National Summit on the Future of Nigeria’s Constitutional Democracy in Abuja on Wednesday, Obasanjo stressed that without a change in leadership approach, constitutional reforms would have limited impact.

While summit organisers, including Chief Emeka Anyaoku and Victor Attah, advocated for a credible constitution to address insecurity and economic issues, Obasanjo maintained that good governance and commitment to citizens’ welfare are more crucial.

Lagos to reinstate psychiatric tests for traffic offenders

The Lagos State government has revealed plans to bring back psychiatric evaluations for traffic offenders as part of efforts to improve road safety and discipline.

Sola Giwa, Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, made this known during the presentation of the communiqué from the second Lagos Traffic Conference held on Wednesday.

The event, which also celebrated the 25th anniversary of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), highlighted key strategies to strengthen traffic regulation and enforcement across the state.
