Amnesty International has claimed that seventeen protesters were killed by Cameroon security forces on Sunday, October 1, 2017.The protesters were demanding independence from the Central African country.

Amnesty International’s Lake Chad researcher, Ilaria Allegrozzi said, “The worrying escalation witnessed over the weekend has now reached a crisis point, the use of excessive force to silence protests in the West and South-West regions of Cameroon is not the solution. All deaths related to these protests must be promptly and effectively investigated.”

Cameroonian authorities had earlier in the year blocked the internet in that part of the country for three months following similar protests.
