Who is Angella Reid? White House’s first black female chief usher fired by Trump

by Tolu O.

In an exclusive report by online magazine Daily Mail, Angella Reid was fired because she did not belong to Team Trump and never held back on the fact that she would have preferred Hillary Clinton sitting in the Oval.

Angella Reid has been a major news item for almost 20 hours now. In an unprecedented move, the White House terminated the appointment of the first woman and the second African-American to function as Chief Usher. Her removal came as a shock to her as it did to other staff at the White House who were informed upon getting to work on Friday that Reid no longer had a job there.

A White House official told the Washington Post, “She is no longer employed here at the White House. We left on very good terms and we wish her the very best“.

But what is it about Angella Reid and her job that makes all of this relatively important?

Reid’s tenure as Chief Usher of the White House is one of the shortest in history. In the last hundred years, only nine people have occupied the non-political position. She joined the White House during President Obama’s administration in October 2011 and replaced the first African-American to hold the position, Adm. Stephen W. Rochon. In a 2016 interview, Reid said she found out about the job opening when she attended a pool party in 2011. She took the bold step, “I googled the White House, spoke to a young lady, and she took a message. Fortunately for me, she took me seriously and someone called me back.”

According to the White House Historical Association, the Chief Usher’s roles include, “overseeing construction, maintenance, remodelling, food, as well as the administrative, fiscal and personnel functions”. Reid had the experience required for the job as she took up her first job in the hospitality industry in 1978. She also worked with the Ritz-Carlton Hotel Group in New York before taking the White House role. Reid has a degree in Hospitality Management from the Carl Duisberg Gesellschaft School in Munich, Germany.

Although Reid has made no comments about having to end her tenure this way, she always enjoyed her time at the White House. She said in 2016, “What I think about most when I walk around the house is who has been here, how had sone what in this particular space. Because, you know, just to think that I am able to walk here now when 100 years ago, a president or first lady did, or other guests did, or some of my ancestors did… It gives me a sense of awe, the fact that slaves built this house and I now work in this house as a leader, something out of my wildest dreams“.

An insider at the White House revealed that Angella Reid is a Hillary Clinton-loyalist and since President Donald Trump took over at the Washington seat of power, she respected him always but “never went above and beyond”. A presidential historian at Rice University, Douglas Brinkley told The Washington Post that the possible reason for firing Reid was because the Trump administration was worried about Obama’s spies and may have been suspicious of her.

The Jamaican native was said to have been heftily rewarded after her departure.
