APC lambasts PDP, Atiku over handling of 2019 peace accord

The governing All Progressives Congress (APC) has criticised the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and its Presidential Candidate, Atiku Abubakar over its absence from the peace accord signing ceremony held in Abuja on Tuesday, describing its excuse for initially boycotting the ceremony as dubious claim and an after-thought.

In a statement by the APC’s spokesman, Lanre Issa-Onilu on Wednesday, hours after the PDP candidate eventually visited the office of the Abdulsalami Abubakar-led National Peace Committee (faciliatators of the peace accord) to sign copy of the peace agreement, the ruling party stressed that “Atiku’s eventual decision to sign the peace deal is clearly a face-saving move following widespread condemnation that greeted his initial refusal to agree to the peace deal.”

According to the statement which described Atiku’s absence as deliberate and the excuse given by his party an after-thought, the APC stressed that his dubious claim of a “communication lapse” as reason for their no-show at Tuesday’s formal signing ceremony is hogwash, adding that the peace committee duly and formally invited the PDP and Atiku like other candidates and political parties contesting the 2019 Elections.”

Speaking further, Issa-Onilu urged the security and other relevant agencies to be on high alert to check what it called a dangerous threat posed by the PDP over its planned actions for the general elections, insisting that the action of the PDP ‘brings to the fore, its open declaration in August this year that it will deploy all “means, schemes, shenanigans in all ramification and magnitude” to manipulate the 2019 election.’

“We, however, must not lose sight of the dangerous and ominous signs the PDP and Atiku have inadvertently shown Nigerians in the leadup to the elections.

“We must stand against and resist plans by retrogressive elements who are now nested in the PDP and their agents to disrupt elections through violence and other undemocratic practices,” he said.

“For signing the 2019 election national peace accord, the Party affirms the commitment of the President Muhammadu Buhari led APC government to a free and fair electoral process. The APC government has an abiding pledge towards a participatory, peaceful, credible and transparent elections,” the statement read.
