Doing it on their own! 10 of our favourite Nigerian celebrity-mums raising their kids

by Wilfred Okiche

In line with this week’s major feature, we asked ourselves, who are the  famous and powerful ladies who (intentionally or not) are making being a single mom tad fashionable? Well, we did a little digging and came up with this list!

Genevieve Nnaji

She’s got beauty, she’s got brains, she’s got …err, a baby. A big one. Nigeria’s sweetheart had a baby about 17 years ago while in secondary school but did not let it deter her in any way from pursuing her dreams. She is fiercely protective of her daughter though and has not been spotted publicly with her.

Ibinabo Fiberesima

She may be persona non grata now but time was when Ms Fiberesima was a star- or at least as close to being one as anybody ever comes. She was famous for the parties, the liasons and of course the babies, the last of which she had for former paramour, Fred Amata. At last count, she’s had 5 kids for different men and remains unmarried.

Omawumi

The Idol runner-up stunned us when she was got herself preggos sometime last year and refused to reveal the identity of her baby daddy. The tabloids took it upon themselves and came up with the name of one Oluwatosin Yussuf while she was awaiting delivery in the United States. Her baby girl is doing great though.

Kaffy

Kaffy is one lady who rocked her pregnancy to the fullest even though she was not married to the baby’s father. The couple is reportedly engaged and only recently, made their first post-baby red carpet appearance together. Baby daddy is a guitarist who works regularly with the famous duo, P-Square.

Modupe Ozolua

This stunning business woman and socialite had her baby at the ripe young age of 21 but soon called it quits with the father of her son and focused on building her various business interests.

Waje

The big voiced songbird is not exactly a chatterbox when it comes to the matter of her 10-year-old love child or the baby’s father but our sources say the union hit the skids a long time ago.

Annie Macaulay

Annie is perhaps the luckiest ‘baby mama’ in the world right now. Her first pregnancy for pop star, 2face Idibia ended in a miscarriage and she promptly had another one just to prove the first was no accident. She stuck by her man through thick and thin and was finally rewarded with an engagement ring on Valentine’s day this year. All eyes are definitely on this union.

Grace Amah

Her movie credits may be on the low these days but actress Grace Amah has something or someone else to keep her busy. Her one year old son, Uche from an unknown man is now the love her life and she has her hands full taking care of the little man.

Ruby

This starlet is working hard at kick starting her singing career but until it gets off the ground, she will be famous for being rapper/producer Jesse Jagz’s baby mama. Reports say they dated briefly back in 2002 while they were still in Jos and the result is a 6 year old love child.

  1. Please where is Kenny Saint Brown????

  2. This shouldn't be a celebrated trend. And on Ibinabo having 5kids!!! 5kids??? Phew! Reminds me of Lauryn Hill( though has is with 1man…yes?)

  3. This is so unAfrican. We do not and should not encourage this trend. Why not celebrate the ones that are still with the husbands? Or better still, encourage the aforementioned to settle down?

  4. Nice work but you should take time out to edit your article… Oh wow! So Jesse Jagz also has a love child? Waje’s was the biggest surprise of all! Do I live in Nigeria or under a rock? Wow!!

  5. Kudos to the ladies mentioned for being single mothers. I'm sure its not an easy task. Ibinabo on the other hand is not an inspiration and should have been left of the list. 5 children from different men? She should be ashamed of herself. Female version of Tuface! *smh*
