Senator Ben Murray-Bruce has finally lent his voice in support of the advocacy for equal gender rights in Nigeria, the largest black nation on earth.
The Nigerian Senate on Tuesday, March 15, rejected a bill to institute gender parity.
The bill which was sponsored by Senator Biodun Olujimi, was titled “Gender Parity and Prohibition of Violence against Women”.
Olujimi, who represents Ekiti south, had argued that the bill would seek equal rights for women in marriage, education and job.
The failure of the bill to pass the second reading had elicited series of heavy criticism from the Nigerian citizenry who questioned the validity of the reasons given.
Several Nigerians have since called on prominent members of the Senate who claim to be working for the masses, to step up and back the Bill when next it makes it to the floor of the red chamber.
The Senator representing Bayelsa East constituency, while expressing his support, said he was out of the country on the fateful day when the Senate rejected the Bill.
I support the Gender Equality #GEOBill. I was abroad with my Senate Cttee when it came up, but I've gotten assurances it will be represented
