BREAKING: Bukola Saraki elected Senate President

Senator Bukola Saraki of the All Progressives Congress, has been elected as the Senate President of the 8th National Assembly.

He was sworn-in a few minutes ago.

Saraki, a former Governor of Kwara state, was unanimously elected as the Senate President.

He was nominated by Sani Yarima, former governor of Zamfara state and Senator Dino Melaye, seconded his nomination.

The clerk of the National Assembly, Abubakar Sani, called for more nominations and when no one came forward, he declared Saraki the duly elected president of the senate.

Only 57 out of the 108 senators-elect, were present at the red chambers. The 51 remaining senators-elect, who belong to the camp of Saraki’s main challenger, Ahmed Lawan, were absent.

The other Senators were at the International Conference Centre in an emergency meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari, at the time Saraki was declared Senate President.
