All relationships are different, but there are some tried-and-true failures that have dissolved even the most solid of foundations. Over time, people have developed some well known trips that will help you rebuild you relationship, or stop it from falling apart. Maybe you’ve heard a few of them a thousand times before, but perhaps hearing them for the 100th time will help.
Everyone has heard that you shouldn’t go to bed angry, but some therapists are pushing the opposite. Some nights it might be better to go to bed angry instead of trying to bring up issues that cannot be resolved at that time. Getting some seep, clearing your head and agreeing to table the argument for a later date might be exactly what you need to get through it. Perhaps by the next day it won’t even seem so big.
Accepting and declaring your responsibility in the fight is crucial in repairing the issue. Expressing empathy for your partner and sharing your own shortcomings or mistakes helps to bring down the tension. As you bring down your walls your partner should do the same, allowing you to really feel each other in the discussion.
Being physically intimate instead of talking it through may seem like a bad idea, but finding the right balance is necessary in resolving battles. Once you get to that point where a discussion won’t remedy the issue, give up the talking and just hold hands. Through touch you are able to reconnect in a much more tangible way, which is especially important when you cannot see eye-to-eye.
