  1. Fashion Designers (25.7)

For making us enjoy proudly Nigeria outfits

By Fortune Nneji

The fashion industry in Nigeria is one with a great potential to encourage employment as it also encourages entrepreneurship. Of all the occupations in the Apparel, accessory and luxury goods industry, Fashion designers are the most notable ones. These individuals who work on the design of clothing and fashion ranges, often specialise in one area of design, such as sportswear, children’s wear, footwear or accessories.

Fashion Designers have been wonderful this year, as Nigerian designers are becoming regular features on some of the world’s runways and gaining footholds with celebrities. Today the question “Who are you wearing?” might just bring up names such as Duro Olowu, Maki Oh, Mai Atafo, or Jewel by Lisa, Inighi.

With the growing participation of our indigenous designers in various fashion weeks holding around the world and within Nigeria, and with proper exposure provided by online and print media and the break out of online marketing platforms, our Fashion Designers in Nigeria have been able to significantly impact the Nigerian demography.

  1. Comedians (25.5)

For being the most reliable source of stress-relief

By Tomi Sodekan

Comedy is reputed as a multi-billion Naira industry attracting hordes of new entrants and practitioners assuming celebrity status and garnering huge fortunes in the process. With the old generation of John Chukwu who later floated the night club, Class, Chief Zebrudaya of New Masquerade and Gbenga Adeboye, and later the likes of Danjuma Mohammed, Ali Baba, Basorge Tariah and Okey Bakassi, making people laugh evolved from being just an art to an industry beginning in the early 90s.

A new standard has been set in the profession with their services being engaged for private and corporate functions. Comedians have also be seen to be toast for blue-chip companies who splash millions on them to become their brand ambassadors. The most interesting part of comedians in Nigeria is the rise of social media comedians who keep us smiling everyday with their creative videos. These set of comedians are the new rave and are gathering massive fanbase. For comedians who are trying to to get a perfect entry-level status, you better be thinking social media. Take queue from Dr.Craze (Craze clown and Ade), Funny African pix, etc.

  1. President (25.3)

For explaining the concept of “a leader is a servant”

By Biyere Joshua

http://careerpedia.ng/careers/legislators/president-(government)

With the way the economy panned out and the entire crisis that took place this year, many will be of the opinion that the president should not make it to this list due to poor leadership. But many fail to understand the occupation is one of the most tasking of all that requires maximum risks and decision-making skills.

The impact an occupation like this has on any country is the most definitive and important. By default, the occupation requires a huge level of commitment and high judgement & decision-making skills. This is not the job one goes on vacation easily as every minute counts. Both international and local groups / organisations have applauded the brave actions of the past president Goodluck Jonathan in accepting his loss. They also agreed that it was the best thing that ever happened to Nigeria. Predictions of a break and possible chaos in the economy were the words coming out from the soothsayers.

As it stands, the current administration is doing all it can to make sure insurgencies are cleared and economy is brought off from the heightened panic around. Though complains have been the voice of many, patience is still the only lifeline the president has from his followers. 2016 hopes to be a defining year for the president. A good or bad one, our next countdown shall reveal.

By Daniel Orubo

http://careerpedia.ng/careers/sales-and-marketing-managers

Getting Nigerians to trust what a brand is selling is no small feat. From brand new products to old products getting a facelift, 2015 has been the year of consumer satisfaction and sending the right message about a product. They have done well in convincing Nigerians to products from shelf-warmer to must-have. That’s what marketers in Nigeria have been doing brilliantly all year; highlighting what’s fresh and relevant about a commodity to entice customers.

For marketers in the banking industry, many are complaining with the unrealistic benchmarks banks give them to get accounts on board, but that is one part of it. With many banks doing lots of rebranding, Consumers are beginning to have new perception and approach to their banking needs. Sales and marketing professionals and brand managers nailed it this year for the banking industry.

  1. Chefs (22)

For showing us the beauty in eating healthy

By Tomi Sodekan

Gone were the days when cooking was simply a house chore and not as a profession. There were the canteens, restaurants who were able to offer something just slightly different from what could be gotten in one’s kitchen. Which was more like eating the same thing but prepared in just a little different way. Cooking for commercial purposes back then did not require any extra skill, asides the basic knowledge of making tasty meals with the right proportion of required ingredients. However, as westernization further slipped into the country and trends evolved with rapid change in societal status, affiliation and beliefs, individuals and families increasingly began to patronize more restaurants, eateries and special kitchens in big hotels. Additionally, more and more Nigerians began to associate themselves with more continental dishes and foreign menus.

As a result of this variation in the lifestyle of Nigerians, cooking is increasingly transcending from being just a hobby, chore or a necessity into more of a viable source of income. More and more individuals are now getting engaged as cooks in small bukas, restaurants, and canteens or as full-blown chefs in big hotels and internationally owned restaurants, depending on their level of skills, although using foreign methods to execute local dishes and also embedding foreign recipes to spice up their menus. There has also been a shift as both male and female chefs are establishing flourishing catering businesses.

Chefs are indeed, without a doubt, raking in large revenues today, either from functioning as top chefs in large high-class hotels and restaurants or working independently, catering to events or cooking exclusively for political office holders, celebrities and the high and mighty society. The business is currently booming, following the spate of high society events, particularly weddings, birthdays, company functions and other high profile occasions that abound in the Nigerian society. Many of the chefs are making name and getting popular for their culinary stints and specialties, birthed from creative experiments, and not just from offering the usual staple foods in the country. Technology has really changed the face of the business, as meals are now prepared under shorter periods, with minimal stress and better results.

With recent trends in the culinary business, such as corporate organisations investing in cooking competitions like the Knorr cooking contest, Making of the chef and several other competitions giving recognition to the development in the profession and also to celebrate the profession with events like Taste off Lagos, as well TV shows to showcase the profession. Also important to note is the rate at which men are taking up the profession. A clear pointer to the success of the profession is the recognition of some people who have done well in bringing chefs to limelight. They include Cyril Agbachom of Quilox, Benjamin Fernando of Fernando Kitchen, (Chef Stone) Kome Emielu of Red Dish Chronicles, John Bada of Airfirst Nigeria, Gbubemi Fregene of Chef Fregz and lot of others.

  1. Visual Artists (21.9)

For painting the economy with art

By Biyere Joshua

In an extract from Joshua, John Adeyemi’s piece on “Visual Arts Practice: A Catalyst for Developing a Local Economy in Nigeria, he stated that record sales have been achieved of Nigerian artworks and of other artists around the globe. It is envisaged that in the near distant future, art will become a part of the major drivers of the Nigerian economy.

It is observed that most of the highest earning artists in Nigeria today are graduates. The impact on the economy then becomes enormous, as these artists constitute a part of the skilled workforce in Nigeria. Their contributions cannot be overruled despite lack of statistical data on them and mostly on their activities.

Art practice in Nigeria has improved and grown in the last two decades. Thanks to the number of art galleries and the level of art activities-exhibitions, conferences, symposiums et cetera which have culminated into the development of visual arts in Nigeria.

Nigeria is experiencing what can be referred to as a surge in prices of paintings, but still far below what is obtainable in places like New York, London, Canada and Tokyo. Buhari (2014) avers that, the 1980s-90s saw the outburst of contemporary art practice, promotion/consumption and appreciation in an unprecedented manner. It is in this period that we saw a dramatic growth in indigenous art appreciation, collection by individuals and corporate organizations who are Nigerians, exhibitions, as well as the opening of many private galleries; even the featuring of salons, auctions, art competitions with handsome/beautiful prizes, et cetera.

Art is a big business now in Nigeria because of the entrant by new galleries springing up, building and enlarging the clientele base. The major players in the art business in Nigeria are gallery owners; among them are Arthouse Contemporary Ltd, Signature gallery, Terra-Kulture, Treasure House, Nimbus gallery, Mydrim gallery, Galleria Romania, Nike Okundaye gallery, Quintessence and others. Private collectors are also on the increase and one of the avid art collectors, Oyasaf under Engineer Yemisi Shyllon perhaps has the largest single collections. Others are corperate collectors like Total E&P Nigeria, Hotel Presidential, Portharcourt, ExxonMobil Producing Nigeria, religious bodies and government establishments.

  1. Nurses (21.7)

For always being there in times of our medical needs

By Tomi Sodekan

Being the foremost caring profession, nursing has developed and witnessed rapid changes to meet the changing needs of the society it serves. High discipline with stern reprimands formed the foundations of the profession and developed with it. The quiet evolution taking place in the nursing world today, the impact of which is being felt in developing countries of the world including our own country Nigeria, has been largely influenced by internal and external developmental forces, impact of technological and industrial world and the society at large; tremendous advances in medical sciences and medical technology, changes and complex structure of hospital organization and management of health care industry; changing concept of patient care and early ambulation, perennial shortage of doctors and trained nurses; increased off-shoot of para-medical professions, the activities of the World Health Organization, and the emphasis of UN Universal Declaration of Human Rights on the right to a standard of living adequate for the health and wellbeing.

With four fundamental responsibilities to promote health, to prevent illness, to restore health and to alleviate suffering, Nurses render health services to the individual, the family and the community and coordinate their services with those of related groups like the doctors. Nigerian nurses in particular, have contributed to the numerous success recorded in the medical world. These roles that are aimed at ensuring a healthy nation are clearly shown in Nigeria’s war against Ebola, the control and treatment of HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis (TB) and malaria.

They strive for success regardless of the hazards encountered in the course of duty. These hazards range from physical stress from standing for long, encounter with sick patients, emotional stress while dealing with patients and their family and loved ones, exposure to gas and radiations from equipment and also ethical dilemmas. The most evident are the incessant bomb strikes causing terrible casualties this year in which their services were at a high demand than usual.

We should also not forget the times of the strike of the medical doctors early in the year. The Nurses were always around taking care of the sick. It was difficult for them, but they were able to manage the crisis.

  1. Radio Presenters (21.6)

For being the KINGS of conversations

By Biyere Joshua

Every morning on the way to work, school, various destinations and late evening when returning, radio presenters have always been part of majority of the population’s day. Many Nigerians are always waiting to get the latest information and opinions of trending issues surrounding various topics in sports, politics, business etc. It can arguably be said, that one out of three cars on the road are tuned to one radio channel.

They do lots of research, put their speaking skills into use effectively and put up engaging topics that gets the Nigerian populace tuned to them. Even with the advent of social media, smart phones, cable TV and smart TVs, Nigerians still find a way to get to listen to radio. Why? Nigerians love expressing themselves.

The election period in Nigeria saw an increased interest in journalism and most especially radio channels. Debates were always going on, and conversations too. Many people’s choices on their candidates were influenced by the conversations on the radio.

With radio channels like NIgeriainfo fm (known for their clear cut moderation of conversations on political and economic issues and also, their keen support of sport conversations), Breeler fm, (known for their powerhouse on sport issues), Smooth fm (for their candid view on trending subjects), Radio Nigeria (for speaking for the government), Wazobia fm (known for providing a platform for all types of Nigerians to get engaged with trending topics), Beat fm (known for bringing entertainment topics) and a whole lot more just to mention a few.

Radio presenters are now beginning to be seen as a powerhouse for conversations on any topic. And their opinions are counting more with each passing day. This can be evident with the current Biafra steamed up activities, Nnamdi Kanu has over the time built in the minds of the igbos tuning to his frequency.

If there is a reason why they should be in our list, it is basically because, they are gradually becoming the uncelebrated influencers of the decisions Nigerians make daily and keep the population company anytime.

  1. Stylist (Wardrobe) (21.4)

For styling Fashion to world class events

By Biyere Joshua

Many people mistake stylists and fashion designers. They are very different occupations but complimenting ones just as you have the tailors in the mix too. Stylists select the clothing for published editorial features, print or television advertising campaigns, music videos, concert performances, and any public appearances made by celebrities, models or other public figures. They are the kings of the wardrobe. In fact, no fashion design team or celebrity can comfortably succeed without a stylist.

Over the years in Nigeria, we have had an increasing interest in styling from the younger generation. All thanks to the growth of the Nigerian fashion industry, we are beginning to see a growing surge of request for a stylist even from individuals who are having difficulty choosing the right set of clothes for an event.

The growth of Stylists is similar to that of makeup artists but less controlled due to the entry into the occupation doesn’t require a defined learning process, but rather, a combination of creativity and experience. However, a very high knowledge of fashion, clothing, and garment and also a reasonable level of psychology are required, and that’s what defines the difference between the starters and the pros.

The growth of stylists in year 2015 can arguably be attributed to the spread of knowledge of styling on social media like (majorly) instagram. For those interested in exploring the world of stylist, explore individuals like Dimeji Alara, Swanky Jerry, Bolaji Animashaun, Toyin Lawani, Ezinne Chinaka etc.

Most of the names mentioned above have contributed a whole lot to the development of the industry and helped appreciate the fashion industry in Nigeria. Nigerians are trying more to keep up with fashion trends and even starting to define our own.

  1. Car Drivers (21.3)

For defining the “profession” in professional drivers

By Tomi

Transport business in Nigeria has gone beyond mere movement of people, goods and services but has become highly competitive, customer service packed, value added services. Road transport has been and still remains the commonest means of transport in Nigeria with vehicles like the bus (danfo, and the most recent being the BRT) and cars (taxi). However, the use of cars have taken a new dimension with the shift from the regular yellow and black cabs to the executive cabs who sometimes require of their drivers to wear uniforms, paint their cabs in particular colour, maintain their cabs in such a way that every facility in it functions properly.

With the establishment of the most recent of the transport outfits, Uber, as an addition to other outfits like Afrocab, Easy Taxi, Tranzit, Metro Taxi, Recabs and a range of others, driving profession has evolved. Cab business in Lagos a mega city with population of 17.5million is presently experiencing an all time high with new companies making a dive into the overtly lucrative sector.

“I was shocked when I entered an Uber cab and was asked if I wanted sweets and a bottle of water. I was forced to ask myself if I was in Nigeria. The drive was so smooth and he asked me what radio channel I wanted to listen to. That was amazing”. Nowadays drivers maintain personalized relationships with their passenger ensuring their comfort and safety. It is a popular notion that riding in taxis is for the wealthy alone, but no, the service is readily becoming available and affordable for just anybody who loves comfort and late night waka (movement). The evolution of this profession not only portrays their relevance within the society but as a contributor towards the growth of the service industry.

We are safe to say that if not for Uber, drivers will not be on our list.

  1. Journalist (20.7)

For creating the platform of debate

By Fortune Nneji

Journalist played big roles in letting us know the facts and how they relate to everyone. From Election facts, figures and information to policies of the current government, and Boko haram.

Though there have been lots of controversial contents and pieces written by them, such as Sahara reporters who have emerged as Nigeria’s “wiki leaks”, we still pay lots of attention to them.

Also, with majority of our Nigerian newspapers moving to the online platform and getting more active, the competition has been set with making sure readers are more in tune with journalists than bloggers.

Journalist have been instrumental In Nigeria as they generated opinions on issues affecting Nigerians and in giving us the facts especially in the year when Nigerians have needed it to stir us through this year of change.

  1. Economic Analyst (20.6)

For predicting our economy with clear-cut intelligence

By Tomi Sodekan

Nigeria is a middle income, mixed economy and emerging market, with expanding financial, service, communications and technology, and entertainment sectors. It was ranked 21st largest economy in the world (nominal GDP), 20th largest (in terms of Purchasing Power) and in 2014 it was rated the largest economy in Africa following an economic rebasing. With such report it would have been expected that the following year will promise a fast growing and developed economy, however, this was not so as the year has been characterized economically by falling oil price which is a major source of revenue for the country, fall of Naira, corruption amongst other problems. Attempts have been made by the government in cushioning the effect of these problems on the economy with various policies, the recent ones being the enforcement of the Treasury Single Account under the Buhari led administration, the refusal to devalue the naira, reduction in lending rate amongst other monetary and fiscal policies.

These policy formulation and implementation would all not be made possible without a profession as an economic analysts whose functions have basically been to analyse, identify economic problems and proffer possible solutions as well as predict economic trends. Nigeria has been blessed with the likes of Pat Utomi, founder of Lagos Business School, Charles Chukwuma Soludo, former CBN Governor, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi the Emir of Kano, Okonjo Iweala the former Nigerian Finance Minister and now Senior Advisor in Lazard, an international financial advisory and asset management firm, amongst others who have ensured that the economy of Nigeria still remains viable regardless of the challenges it is faced with.

By Tomi

The most compelling achievement they accomplished this year was to successfully ensure Nigeria was declared an Ebola-free nation. From the outbreak that occurred last year 2014, to this present day, they have ensured that Nigerians are up to date with various prevention and protection techniques. They have kept this trend going in all other health.

Nigeria has been no exception to the experience of deadly diseases as it affects every other part of the world. Included but not limited to them are:  WHO scoring Nigeria high on its elimination of meningitis A, Nigeria’s removal from the list of polio-endemic nations by WHO, and of much pride is the fact that after successfully tackling Ebola virus in 2014, Nigeria now has contributed the highest contingent to African Union support team for the battle against Ebola, also Nigeria has been certified to have attained Millenium Development Goals target on HIV/AIDS and Maternal Mortality in the global development goals as well as performing its first open heart surgery amongst other successes.

  1. Pharmacists (18.4)

For consistently creating formulas for our health-wellness

In addition to the popular beliefs held by several Nigerians about pharmacists as an individual who simply sells drugs over-the-counter, they are healthcare professionals who practice in the field of health sciences focusing on safe and effective medication use. Pharmaceutical industry in Nigeria has grown at an average annual rate of between 10 and 15 per cent over the years. This positive development may have been stimulated by rigorous Government policy on the promotion of local drug production. Six companies commenced upgrading or building of new facilities in preparation to meet WHO prequalification requirements from which in 2014, three of these companies were approved by WHO. The implication of this is that there will be further improvement in local production, increased opportunity to participate in international tenders for the supplies of anti-retrovirals, anti-malarials and anti-TB medicines, and promotion of marketing of medicines by such companies beyond Nigeria. With this, Nigerian pharmacists have been able to meet 25% demand of drug production and 60% pharmaceutical production in ECOWAS countries domiciled in Nigeria.

As a complement to boasting of about 120 local drug manufacturing companies, they have also made remarkable success in distribution, against all odds, they have ensured convenience and quality through approval and establishment neighbourhood pharmacies and drugstores. In doing this, as a collaborative effort with other healthcare professionals they have ensured quality healthcare delivery and helped to nurture a healthy nation. For building Nigeria block by block

By Fortune Nneji

Before anything is said about this occupation let us recap some of the mind-blowing construction projects that have gone through the year 2015 in Nigeria. Projects like the Eko Atlantic City, The Lagos Light Rail Project, the Abuja World Trade Centre, The Lekki Free Trade Zone, The Abuja Millennium Tower, and the construction of a 1400 MW gas turbine power station in delta state, the Abuja Gateway Centre and the lists goes on and on. 1. HAWKERS (15.7)

For selling opportunities on the street to the lower class.
by Fortunate Nnaji
http://careerpedia.ng/careers/street-vendors/hawkers

They are part of the society as they make certain transportable merchandise available at certain points. From refreshment on the road, to accessories without walking into a store or the market, they provide them. Even for just entertaining our eyes with some window-shopping, they provide that.

They are also surprisingly the first point of introduction of many products to the market of drivers and road commuters with no time to go through a catalogue or window-shopping. If hawkers are displaying your products on the street you have just gained unsolicited product advertisement, a method that has helped products like Superbite (sausage roll) and Big cola. Hawking as an occupation has kept a lot of people from going into crimes.

Pending when manufacturing factories and more construction projects come into play, one of the most effective ways many less privileged people will get themselves busy is through hawking.

If the traffic issues are sorted out, there might be no space for them to be on our list.
