Kukawa town, in Borno State was attacked on Monday by gunmen suspected to be members of Boko Haram terrorist sect.
The insurgents reportedly burnt down Kukawa police station, over 250 vehicles, not less than 200 houses, the government lodge and several other public buildings in the town.
A resident of the town, Mallam Abor Kanembu recounted that the insurgents arrived the town in Hilux vehicles and motorcycles and drove to the police station, where they began shooting sporadically at residents, with Rocket Propelled Launchers and AK47 rifles.
He said “the insurgents burnt down the Kukawa Divisional Police station and some public buildings in the town. I cannot tell the casualty figure because we had to flee the town in fear of our lives.”
Mohammed Mafindi, another resident of Kukawa revealed that they had to abscond from the town when the terrorists commenced the attacks. He said the incident occurred between 4:00 am and 10 am on Monday, after which the gunmen departed the town.
“The attack was a reprisal to an attack earlier attempted by the men of the Nigerian police Force, who were on routine patrol in the area in which they opened fire on the insurgents. The insurgents immediately responded by killing two policemen, and abducted two others while two policemen escaped into the bush”, Mafindi said.
Meanwhile, the caretaker chairman of Kukawa local government area, Alhaji Modu Musa confirmed the attack, saying that Boko Haram killed many people, while burning down hundreds of cars and houses.
