Commissioner for Happiness? | Here are 5 other ridiculous things Governor Okorocha has done

One governor who continues to court controversies with his pointless actions and uncouth statements is Rochas Okorocha of Imo.

Since his emergence as governor, Okorocha’s actions have been nothing short of disastrous and bereft of common sense.

Whenever he makes the news, it is either for a completely ridiculous reason or just creating unnecessary publicity around himself as usual.

For a man who continues to delude himself as the “most achieved governor in the history of Nigeria”, it is unsurprising that these actions seem normal.

His latest atrocity is the appointment of his sister, Mrs Ogechi Ololo (nee Okorocha) as the state’s Commissioner for Happiness and Couples’ Fulfillment.

This, however, is just one out of the many ridiculous actions taken by the governor.

Here are 5 other ridiculous things Okorocha has done since he became governor.

A SPECIAL ASSISTANT ON LAGOS AFFAIRS

Okorocha made history by being the first governor from another state to appoint a Special Assistant on Lagos Affairs, a position he handed to former Nollywood actress, Nkiru Sylvanus. The purpose of that office, however, has not made any sense up until this moment.

ERECTING STATUES WORTH OVER N50om

Even though workers in the state are still being owed for months, Okorocha deemed it fit to erect statues of African leaders, worth N500m each.

This action had led to outrage in the country, especially on social media where Nigerians were unable to understand the rationale behind the decision.

More worrisome is the fact that Okorocha firmly defended his actions, stating that he would “erect as many of such structures as possible.”

“And in case these “Galatians” do not know if all we need to do to attract good things or investments to Imo is erecting statues, then, we have no option than to erect as many of such structures as possible. We owe no one apology. Rochas made a promise to open the doors of Imo to the rest of the world, for good and he is doing that and we cannot be deterred by these enemies of our people,” a statement defending his action had said.

The governor has unveiled just two of these statues – Jacob Zuma of South Africa and Johnson Sirleaf of Liberia – which were recently inspected by Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo.

ASKING PENSIONERS TO FORFEIT ARREARS

After pressure was mounted on him to pay pensioners their arrears, governor Okorocha asked them to forfeit 60 percent of their benefits.

The governor openly asked aged Nigerians who served the state to sign off more than half of their entitlement.

This alone is a testament that Okorocha either does not understand his role as governor or just is capitalising on the fact that he will not be questioned.

N600M CHRISTMAS TREE

What are we going to say about the N600 million Christmas tree erected in Imo in December 2016? Okorocha had described the tree as a tourist attraction after he was widely criticised for wasteful spending. But after the completion of the Christmas celebration, the ‘tourist attraction’ was brought down.

BILLBOARDS FOR OBAMA’S HANDSHAKE

We can’t forget so soon the aftermath of his “follow come” visit with President Buhari to former President Barack Obama of the United States in 2015.

Okorocha made a news of his one-minute handshake with Obama and before we could say ‘Jack Robinson’, billboards emblazoned with ‘’BEHOLD THE FACES OF CHANGE!’’ started springing up in the state to celebrate that great “achievement”.

You don’t need to be a seer to know that Rochas Okorocha is working assiduously on the next ridiculous idea.
