The interim President of Burkina Faso, Michel Kafando, has returned to power, after the presidential guard toppled the government last week.
Civilian rule returns to the West African nation after six African leaders were hosted in Abuja, by President Muhammadu Buhari, for an extraordinary ECOWAS summit.
The leaders, who travelled to Ouagadougou from Abuja to oversee the transfer of power, were welcomed by the head of the presidential guard, Gen Gilbert Diendere.
With the help of a respected traditional ruler, Mogho Naaba, the presidential guard agreed to leave Ouagadougou’s streets and return to barracks.
The head of the ethnic Mossi community said of the deal: “They want to avoid clashes between soldiers. They are the ones who must protect the people and their belongings. I ask everyone to forgive.”
