Dogara versus Jibrin | The winners and losers

The drama that in recent times engulfed the hallowed chambers of the House of Representatives is now starting to look like the plot of a season of the drama series, House of Cards.

Following the sack of Abdulmumin Jibrin as the chairman of the appropriation committee by the speaker, Yakubu Dogara, a can of the worms that ate into the controversial 2016 budget was kicked open.

Jibrin went ahead to accuse Dogara of padding the budget and the back and forth began.

Here are the winners and losers from the fiasco so far, even though it is far from over as it is.

Losers

Abdulmumin Jibrin

The lawmaker was the first to lose when he was sacked as the chairman of the appropriation committee- a ‘juicy’ position in the House of Representatives. After his sack, Jibrin went on social media to demand for Dogara’s resignation as well as blow open, a purported scheme to pad the budget.

Jibrin as the chairman of the appropriation committee that oversaw the passing of the most controversial budget ever signed in Nigeria spuriously defended the House of Reps when reports of an alleged padding of the budget made it to the media.

However, following his sack in July, Jibrin suddenly turned into a Nightingale- one that could only sing of the decadence and corruption in the legislative arm of government especially the alleged padding of a budget that was passed in May.

He severally accused Dogara and other members of the House of padding the budget.

Jibrin did lose his credibility as his actions begged the question as to, ‘why voice out after you were sacked?’

Yakubu Dogara

Even though Jibrin’s continuous yelping about Dogara’s involvement in the budget saga is not enough to unseat the seemingly always-cool speaker of the House of Rep, it does put a huge dent on his credibility.

Also, the Department of State Services have been ordered by the President to investigate the budget padding– Dogara could really do without the negative attention and investigation.

Winners

President Muhammadu Buhari

When the President presented the budget to the National Assembly in December 2015, no one anticipated in the magnitude of drama that would come after.

In the ensuing drama, the Presidency was accused of padding the budget with inconsistent expenditures gulping a whooping billions in naira. President Buhari then, maintained that he was ignorant of any padding and promised to fish out the elements responsible.

It does appear that the President has been vindicated even as Jibrin continues to throw allegations of budget padding at Dogara and the entire House of Reps.

Olusegun Obasanjo

In 2015, former president Olusegun Obasanjo had accused the legislative arm of government of insensitivity to the Nigerian situation and gross corruption.

Senate President Bukola Saraki had respectfully replied the former president and laid the matter to rest.

However, with the recent spat between Jibrin and Dogara, Obasanjo did not waste any time to declare that he had been vindicated. He further restated his claims of corruption in the National Assembly.
