Family of police sergeant killed over N20,000 demand justice

Family members of Salvation Adaka, a police sergeant who was killed by a colleague over N20,000 have demanded justice for his murder.

Adaka was allegedly shot dead by three other police officers over N20,000 they were given by people organizing a funeral in the area where they were on duty.

A representative of the family, Joseph Yabefa told the News Agency of Nigeria that an autopsy showed that he died of bullet wounds.

“We have been following developments on the case; our interactions with the police indicate that three policemen with Adaka on that day were immediately arrested and detained.

“We were also told that one of them, who was not indicted, has been released while two are still in police custody awaiting prosecution.

“Most importantly, investigations have indicated that they were on official duty when the incident occurred. They were not on an illegal duty as being speculated in some quarters.

“We are in grief because Salvation Adaka was the bread winner of the entire family,’’ he said.

Spokesman for the Bayelsa Police Command, DSP Asinim Butswat said only the state commissioner of police had the powers to prosecute the policemen.
