Florida Democratic congresswoman, Frederica Wilson who is in the eyes of the media after alleging that US President Donald Trump treated a Gold Star family with disrespect is facing threats, her office said Thursday.
As a result the four-term Rep. has, therefore, remained in Florida this past week and missed several House votes, including Thursday’s budget resolution vote.
“She chose to stay home for safety reasons. We have received a lot of threats. She will be returning next week,” said Joyce Jones, Wilson’s spokeswoman.
“This is a serious matter and that is the only reason she would ever miss votes,” Jones added.
Giving no further specifics, Jones said the threats, were mostly made over the telephone, and said a security detail is with the congresswoman, while U.S. Capitol Police is checking in on staff.
Wilson came to the spotlight last week after she claimed she overheard Trump on the phone telling Myeshia Johnson, the widow of Sgt David Johnson who was killed in Niger, that her husband knew what he signed up for, while on the way to Miami International Airport to meet the body of the special corps officer. Wilson says the president’s remarks were insensitive.
The allegation drew ire from Trump, who responded with tweets, calling Wilson “wacky” and accusing her of fabricating the statement.
In addition, White House Chief of Staff John Kelly also called Wilson an “empty barrel” who mischaracterised her comments years earlier at an FBI building dedication.
