Forget it. PDP won’t break its rule for Fayose

by Alexander O. Onukwue

Governor Ayo Fayose’s ambition to take Buhari’s seat has taken a big hit because the PDP has apparently zoned the 2019 Presidency to the North.

According to the publicity secretary of the Party, Dayo Adeyeye, the decision is not a new one but was reached at the party’s national convention of which the Ekiti state Governor was part of.

Mr Fayose is the chairman of the PDP Governors Forum and has been mooting a presidential bid for months now. Without any clear front-runner in the party, Fayose took the step of declaring officially his intention by writing the party. His campaign has been on twitter for the past two weeks after an image of a poster bearing him as ‘The Solution’ was posted.

It now seems the Governor would not be able to contest for the mandate of the party for the Presidential slot and it cannot be said that it is an entirely surprising development. Given the situation in the APC where President Muhammadu Buhari is almost certainly going to be given a return for a second term, the PDP would want to present a northern candidate as well so as to compete with the President on all fronts, especially for his so-called 12 million votes.

It will now be seen what Fayose’s next move would be. Prince Adeyeye noted that Fayose, as a senior player in the PDP, would not be leading by example were he to seek to go against the party’s laid down direction for the coming elections. However, the Governor has proved to be his man before and we will watch to see what he does.
