“I’m the first person that will break the supposed jinx in Oyo State” | “They should stop commercialising Jesus Christ, he’s our Lord and Saviour” | These are our top 7 quotes of the week

by Kolapo Olapoju

Every week, people talk, most of all politicians. While some make sense, others, not so much, however, they have one thing in common; their comments pique interest.

We bring to you the top 7 quotes of the week:

1. “There is always a first person to do something. I’m the first one(person) that will break the supposed jinx in Oyo State. And there is actually no jinx anywhere. Before, in some states, I think Kano, they never had the second term, Shekarau did it. In Borno, SAS (Senator Ali-Modu Sheriff) did it. So if in Oyo State they have never had it, Ajimobi will do it.”

– A bullishly optimistic Abiola Ajimobi, assures people that he will be the one to break the jinx of one-term governorship in Oyo state. The incumbent governor would rather remain ‘incumbent’ for as long as possible, hence his determination to follow the examples of Ali-Mordu Sheriff and Ibrahim Shekarau.

2. “While we at the Congress appreciate the security situation in the country, especially in the North East, we stand to be counted on the side of those who argue for holding of elections on their prescribed dates. Certainly, the dangers in the land are unmistakably real. Nonetheless, we do believe, there are greater dangers in a postponement. For instance, what assurance do we have that the security situation will improve in the next couple of months?”

– Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, lends its tainted voice to the unsuccessful stand against election postponement. The congress released a statement arguing that it acknowledges the fact that the dangers in the land are unmistakably real, yet feels there were greater dangers in postponing the elections.

3. “Nobody can Islamize Nigeria. They have commercialised Jesus Christ. They should stop commercialising Jesus Christ. He is our Lord and Saviour. You know what Jesus Christ did in the temple, he chased them away. We shall chase away those pastors who have collected money from PDP to tell us lies. We shall chase them away on behalf of our Lord Jesus Christ.”

– Amaechi, declares his intention to fight on behalf of ‘our Lord Jesus Christ”. Governor of Rivers state and Director-General pf Buhari’s campaign, Rotimi Amaechi, made a serious allegation when he stated that PDP had bribed pastors with N6bn to rally support for the ruling party.

4. “I proposed umbrella to the party in 1998 as its symbol and it was carried with spontaneous applause and commendation. The proposal for the adoption of the umbrella as symbol of the then emerging political party, PDP, was presented on my behalf by one time President of the Senate, the late Dr. Chuba Okadigbo, in his capacity as Chairman of the Publicity Committee of the political association, whose responsibility, it was, to consider a name and symbol for the association, in preparation for its registration as a political party with the Independent Electoral Commission, INEC.”

– The latest person with a grudge against the PDP is the designer of the party’s official logo, the umbrella. Gbenga Amobonye says the party has repeatedly failed to recognise and appreciate his work, in spite of attempts by him to get them to reward his efforts, which has become symbolic for the party.

5. “Look at the kind of leadership we have been having. The leader may be good in himself, but those around him are sycophants. They are the ones who destroy the country and any good leader should beware them. If he hasn’t got the capacity, then don’t vote for him. So, we have to test them. And those who are wasting their money buying (votes), Nigerians are even wiser than that today. They will eat your money for nothing.”

– Former Archbishop of the Lagos Metropolitan See of the Catholic Church, Anthony Cardinal Okogie, giving his opinion on leadership and the Nigerian elections in a recent interview. The Cardinal was more particular about politicians mixing religion with politicss.

6. “We do not entertain losing the election. We will not lose this election because we have done well. We will not lose this election because our party is loved by the people. We won’t lose this election because we have achieved. We won’t lose this election because the opposition and its leaders in spite of their false promises, propaganda and allegations, have shown that they are not an option at all, an alternative to what we have on ground, the government of President Goodluck Jonathan.”

– In a recent interview with Vanguard, PDP spokesman, Chief Olisa Metuh, interrupted the interviewer to declare that the ruling party, PDP, would not lose the postponed general elections. Metuh says theyr are not entertaining thoughts of losing at the polls.

7. “Whatever we have done in the last four years, we believe that we will even do more in the next four years. Most governments all over the world do better in their second tenure. This is because the Presidents are more stable that time, especially in this two-term arrangement. They sit down and plan for the country and focus on key areas.”

– President Goodluck Jonathan, while speaking with Traditional rulers, during his campaign visit to Kogi state. Jonathan sought to convince his audience that the second four years of a President are the best years of his life…
