Fire on Monday gutted the National Headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Abuja, The Punch reports.

According to an official of the commission, the fire started due to a spark from the air conditioner in the office of the Personal Assistant to the Chairman.

The official said the fire started around 12:10pm and burnt the curtain in the office of the PA to the Chairman but was put out before it could do a severe damage.

Men of the Fire Service Unit of the commission put out the fire within five minutes, the official said.

The National Chairman of INEC in charge of the South West, Solomon Soyebi, confirmed the incident.

He said, “There was a fire outbreak in INEC in the office of the PA to the Chairman. It was caused by an electrical fault from an Air Conditioner.

“It has been brought under control by men of the fire service.”
