Sotonye Melford Georgewill, a serving member of the Legislative Assembly in Akuku-Toru local government area of Rivers State was on Sunday night killed by unknown gunmen along Accra Street in Port Harcourt.

Reports say Georgewill, who was until his death a staunch member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state, represented Ward 2 in the AKULGA Legislative Assembly and was married with two children.

According to an eyewitness: “Sotonye came out of his house to answer someone that called him on phone and said he was waiting in front of the house. On getting to the car that was waiting in front of his house, two men came out and one of them stabbed him in the chest and he fell to the ground immediately. The killers then fired gunshots into the air to scare people away before escaping.”

Read the Leadership report below:

A relative of the deceased councillor who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said Georgewill lived in his grandfather’s house along Accra Street where he was murdered.

He was, however, not sure if the late councillor had any quarrel with anybody shortly before his death.

LEADERSHIP gathered that some police officers in a white van came minutes after the incident to take the corpse away.

However, as at the time of filing this report, the police in the state could not confirm the killing as the public relations officer (PPRO), Mr Ahmad Mohammed said he was away on an official duty, adding “I am indisposed now. I can’t talk.”

Meanwhile, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Rivers State has expressed anger over the killing of the lawmaker.

The PDP, in a statement in Port Harcourt yesterday, said the assassination of the councillor came few days after the kidnap of three stalwarts of the party who are still being held captive.

The statement, which was signed by Jerry Needam, special adviser on media to the state chairman, Bro Felix Obuah, alleged that the ugly development was nothing short of a calculated plot by political opponents to provoke the party and ignite crisis in the state.
