[The Legislative Blog]: The Senate has done well with the proposed N300,000 donation to IDPs

Senator Baba Kaka Bashir Garbai representing Borno Central in the Upper Chamber moved the motion on the humanitarian crisis in the North East region of Nigeria. He was supported by 17 other lawmakers. He reminded the House that the almost 10 billion naira IDP support fund proposed by the Executive in the national budget had already been raised but could not be accounted for as there is a daily diversion of cash and other aid materials meant for the IDPs. Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu and Senate Leader, Ali Ndume also made similar arguments in support of the motion.

In agreement to Senator Sam Anyanwu’s suggestion about setting up an ad-hoc committee to fully investigate the situation in the region, the senate made a resolution to set up the committee.

The high point was when Senator James Manager representing Delta South suggested that each senator should contribute N100,000 to support the IDPs and his reason? To show seriousness. Another Senator, Adamu Aliero raised the sum to N300,000 and yes, it was agreed upon.

Also, to commence investigation on the diversion of food and cash to the North East, that ad-hoc committee mentioned earlier was immediately set up and it is to report back to the House in 2 weeks. Yes! Yes!! We like this!!!

Some of the eight members of the commitee are Senator Shehu Sani, Senator Ben Murray-Bruce, Senator Theodore Orji and Senator Oluremi Tinubu.

Good job! We’ll keep an eye on the progress of this committee and we expect that the total of their N300,000 donations will be monitored so it gets to the IDPs who need it.
