NFF sets up panel to investigate error but it’s a hoax

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has set up a four-man committee to probe the error which led to FIFA sanctioning Nigeria and awarding victory to Algeria.

What happened:

Football governing body, FIFA had fined the NFF and awarded a 3-0 victory to Algeria, after Nigeria fielded a suspended player against the northern African country.

Shehu Abdullahi, who had earlier been suspended played the match.

The sanction, however, did not affect Nigeria’s qualification to the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

NFF President, Amaju Pinnick has reacted to the sanction, stating that it was an error.

What is happening:

“The committee has two weeks to submit its report,” said Amaju Pinnick, NFF president, in a statement on Wednesday.

“It will have the responsibility of thoroughly investigating how the slip came about and those who were responsible, recommend appropriate sanctions and also make other recommendations that will forestall this kind of error in the future.”

He added that such errors will no longer be condoned, stating that personnel will take responsibility for their actions.

“People will as from now take responsibility for their actions, inactions, misconduct, negligence and downright ineptitudeness,” he said.

“We cannot continue to go on this way. What happened was a major gaffe and we will no longer condone this level of indolence and unseriousness.

“People must change their general attitude and their approach to work henceforth, or be ready to face sanctions.”

What this means:

Judging by its antecedent, the NFF panel can be considered a hoax, which will lead to nothing.

The Federation, in the past has proven to always kill controversies it is enmeshed in.

In 2010, when Nigeria qualified for the World Cup, Super Eagles players protested non-payment of salaries and bonuses.

The NFF claimed bankruptcy, leading to an investigation which never saw the light of day.

The football body has proven over time to be fatally corrupt, so forgive us if we have no confidence in this action.
