The Cinema Exhibitors Association of Nigeria (CEAN) has announced that the Nigerian film industry achieved its highest box-office revenue in 2024, marking a 60% increase compared to the previous year.
According to CEAN’s National Chairman, Ope Ajayi, the industry earned a total of ₦11.5 billion from ticket sales across cinemas in Nigeria in 2024, up from ₦7.2 billion in 2023.
Ajayi noted that cinemas in Nigeria accommodated approximately 2.5 million customers in 2023, which increased to about 2.6 million in 2024.
He also listed the top five Nollywood movies that contributed to increasing the Nigerian box office in 2024:
1. Everybody Loves Jenifa’ by Funke Akindele – ₦1.124 billion
2. ‘Queen Lateefah’ by Wunmi Toriola – ₦365.5 million
3. ‘Ajosepo’ by Kayode Kasum – ₦257.3 million
4. ‘Ajakaju’ by Eniola Alao – ₦252.8 million
5. ‘Alakada Bad & Boujee’ by Toyin Abraham – ₦229.1 million
“This is a remarkable achievement, illustrating the industry’s resilience, creativity, and determination,” Ajayi remarked.
“It is also the first time we are seeing an increase in admissions since 2020, signalling a significant upturn in the cinema subsector,” he added.
