Omoigui Osasogie: Do music that impacts positively on our youth [NEXT]

by Omoigui Osasogie

Music is a form of entertainment whether secular or religious. According to the Oxford dictionary, music is an arrangement of sounds of one or more voices or instruments. Thoughts and emotions could be expressed through music. It allows deep expressions especially the traditional songs. Music is globally regarded as the food of love and healing text that acts as soothing balm to a traumatized mind and soul. All deep things are song. It seems somehow the central essence of us, song; as if all the rest were but wrappings and hulls. – Thomas Carlyle.

Music in the past was different from what we have now. Music in the past was on a slow pace which the old and young could dance to. Music then was mostly based on life experience and lessons to learn in life. It influenced and appealed to the mind in several ways with the ability to effect change on individuals. Musicians in the past were not acknowledged and parents didn’t want their children to reckon in the midst of them, not to mention making them role models.

king sunny ade-Present day music is diverse and versatile. It has underscored the impact of music in the past. So much vibes has been added to the present age music that one can only marvel at the pace music is. This present time we see music competition where people display their musical talents unlike the past where no such happened. Raunchy songs tend to sell more these days and artistes have to deliver videos to back them up to secure fame. These songs rule the airwaves and rake in like dollars.

Wizkid and CB

Considering the fact that the Nigerian Music Industry is acknowledged as one of the biggest in the world, success rapidly rubs off on the young generation of artistes whose fortunes are turned around for the better once new acts manage to drop their songs on the airwaves and of course, this didn’t happen in the past. The musicians of this present time are viewed as role models by children and even adults are most likely to emulate them. Fear is being expressed over the music of the present that has been made worse by the hip hop culture spawning musical lyrics that influence violence, drugs, alcohol, sex and flagrant disrespect for authority.  My take on this present music is that because we are not as open minded as the western culture, we should try to do songs that will not only impact positively on the youth but that we would be proud of.

The future of music lies in the hands of new or rather upcoming artistes. Some seem to be portraying a good and positive taste in music with the aim of influencing the community at large. With the way music was in the past and how it is now, we sure know that there will definitely be a change for good. Just as technology is taking over the world so also will music. There will be so many infusions here and there to make it better. There would be so much enlightenment and entertainment awareness.
